How can we show respect on Remembrance Day?

Let’s talk about respect

What does respect...

  • look like
  • feel like
  • sound like to you?

Let’s learn about respect in the following TVOKids video with host Gabrielle!

Think

Pause and reflect

  • Who are people in your community that show respect? How do they do that?
  • How might you show respect to others in your daily life?

Share your thoughts with someone else, if you can.

Respect in action

Respect can be shown and experienced in many ways. For example:

Gabrielle shared the following positive phrases that you can say to yourself and others:

I care about YOU and want the best for YOU.

I care about ME and want the best for ME.

Can you think of any other phrases you could use?

We remember to show respect

Another way we can show respect is to remember, honour, and learn from the past.

In parts of Canada, one of the days we observe is Remembrance Day on November 11.

On this day, we remember the people who have served and continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Check out the following flashcards for some ways we can show our respect on Remembrance Day.

Courage in our daily lives

The soldiers who we honour on Remembrance Day showed a lot of courage. They fought for peace and freedom.

Let’s learn about how we might show courage in our daily lives in the following TVOKids video with host Gabrielle!

Explore the following images for some examples of showing and experiencing courage.

One small way we can show both respect and courage on Remembrance Day is by wearing a poppy and attending a Remembrance Day event. The poppy is an important symbol on Remembrance Day.

Wearing poppies and other types of flowers can be a special way to honour soldiers.

We've learned so much about the importance of Remembrance Day! Let’s test our knowledge with this matching activity.

Create a symbol of peace

We learned that poppies, cornflowers (bleuets), and forget-me-nots are some examples of the flowers that people use to remember. They also are symbols of respect and peace.
